Train as a Coach – Choosing your pathway

There are currently two training routes available for instruction in order to achieve certification and therefore two Coaching Bodies offering registration. These two bodies are Coach Bowls (formerly BDA) and EBCS – English Bowls Coaching Society (formerly English Bowls Coaching Scheme).

There are many factors to consider and the ASBC believe that it is the individual’s right to make their own choice based on their own criteria and goals. We merely seek to enable that choice to be an informed one.

You may therefore see the same point appear in the pros and the cons. Some points may present to an individual as a pro whereas another may view the same point as a con.

COACH BOWLS

Pros:

  • Recognised by National Governing Bodies (Bowls England and English Indoor Bowling Association)
  • A national sports coaching qualification in its own right.
  • 50% bursaries towards the course fee are available from the NGB’s.
  • Theory sessions conducted over zoom.

Cons:

  • Course fee almost double that of EBCS.
  • Bursaries have certain criteria and are only paid out if the candidate is successful in passing the course.
  • Much more theory focused course, higher academic focus.
  • Theory sessions conducted over zoom.
  • As a result of the required structure of the coaching qualification the course may focus on and reference areas that are not bowls specific.
  • Longer time commitment overall.
  • Practical courses may be held quite some distance away e.g. Sussex or Berkshire.

EBCS

Pros:

  • Course fee of almost half the cost compared to Coach Bowls.
  • All sessions conducted face to face.
  • Lower academic focus, less theory focused.
  • Bowls specific focus and training.
  • Course venue within the Surrey county (although can be arranged outside of Surrey if desired).
  • Shorter time commitment overall as compared to Coach Bowls.

Cons:

  • Not recognised by the National Governing Bodies.
  • Not eligible for bursaries.
  • Not a Sports qualification.
